For visitors and island residents alike, stunning beach views and gorgeous sunsets don´t get old. Sipping a beer or cocktail with toes dipped in soft sand melts away stress and, if accompanied by a sumptuous meal at the water´s edge, we could call it a perfect day.
The sound of waves, colourful early evening sky and serene atmosphere await visitors at @ Beach Bar and Restaurant, located at Beyond Resort in Karon Beach. Greeted by the friendly staff, we quickly found ourselves looking through the menus while sipping tropical cocktails: Sawadee was a bit on the sugary and tangy side, while Coconut Cooler was sweet but refreshing. The restaurant is right by the beach and boasts amazing views; later in the evening the ambiance is enhanced by a two-person live band.
We started with unusually named Andaman Toasted Stalken (assorted sea food with garlic, dill, and cream mayo) that resembles mini sandwiches and looks better in reality than the in the menu photo. It was surprisingly good, moist and flavoursome. We also had one of the classic appetizers, Seared Sesame Tuna , served with warm light Japanese soy sauce and wild mushrooms. It was just as it should be - fresh and simple, yet tasty.
Before our entrées, arrived we switched to white wine, opting for smooth and light New Zealand Herring Bay that paired nicely with seafood. Sipping the cool wine, we enjoyed the rainbow-like colours of the sunset while listening to the live music. The volume was perfect, allowing us to hold a conversation, yet still able to take pleasure in the music. The band mainly played evergreen hits that seem to appeal to most of its international guests.
We were excited to see our main courses arrive and impressed by their presentation. We enjoyed two great dishes: West & Rock Sea Steak (grilled beef tenderloin and rock lobster tail served with béarnaise and white butter lemon sauce and mashed potato) was simply delicious. The beef was of a great cut and size and the dish came with various veggies which added a extra dimension to the meal. We also tried Herbs Grilled Salmon with lemon white butter sauce served on mixed vegetables noodles and pumpkin risotto. This was fantastic! The beautifully fresh salmon was perfectly cooked and paired with a delightful sauce.
Deeply absorbed in the conversation and atmosphere, we took our time over the food and wine. Although full from dinner, after a while we wanted something sweet, so we ordered Beyond White Chocolate Mousse with chocolate sauce, assorted dried fruit and peach. This dessert combination was unusual, especially given the dry fruit that was sprinkled on the plate, but the mousse wasn´t too heavy.
As we continued to enjoy the evening, we were impressed by the attentive staff who never made us feel rushed. Finally, as we got up to leave after a great dining experience that lasted a good few hours, we noticed that the restaurant was almost full.
