Opposite SKYE Lake Club, near Villa Market at Boat Avenue
First franchise outlet in Thailand, providing healthy and delicious food with its famous rotisserie-roasted chicken. It also has a bar with great ambience and music, that serves wines and beer.
Just opened in fashionable Boat Avenue, this is “Kenny Rogers’ Roasters” first Thai venture by the well-established and multi-award winning restaurant chain. Started in Florida in 1981 by the celebrated country singer, the KR “Roaster” brand is already flourishing in Malaysia and the Philippines.
Living up to its stated aim of offering “friendly service in a comfortable setting”, it is the epitome of an up-market American grill, “your home [away] from home”. The setting is spacious, with pristine, modern décor and diners can choose one of two areas – flanked either by the well-stocked bar or open kitchen.
The cuisine is based on high-class grills and roasts, American style, with an emphasis on generous portions and carefully sourced ingredients. It represents great value for money. Chicken is at the heart of the menu. Prepared with loving care, it is marinated with citrus, sage, oregano and ginger, then rotated in a wood-fired rotisserie which allows excess fat to escape while sealing in the flavour. It is available as a quarter or half, with a whole chicken and four side dishes available for a family feast.
The other signature offerings are imported beef steak, marinated and served with grilled tomatoes, mashed potatoes and ‘chunky’ vegetables, and barbequed pork ribs. Fish fillet with aromatic rice is another option. If you want a quick food fix, there are a surprising large range of starters and accompanying dishes: a range of sandwiches and tortilla wraps, cocktail sausages, salads, bruschetta, a cheesy macaroni, even five soups. Italy is also represented by a spaghetti carbonara and Thailand by pastas featuring green curry or tom yam. There is an imaginative selection of fresh fruit drinks and mouth-watering desserts.
We opt for a generous Caesar salad with a lavish topping of succulent breast of chicken, and moist and crunchy Texas tortilla wraps. For her main course, my partner chooses the BBQ pork ribs, exceedingly tender and tasty, with a special rich sauce; some of the best ribs on the planet. I choose the melt-in-the-mouth quarter chicken, with three side dishes from an available eight – mashed potato, coleslaw and ‘al dente’ vegetables. All complemented by excellent glasses of wine: a South African shiraz and a merlot from Chile.
If this opening venture is anything to go by, “Kenny Rogers’ Roasters” deserves to go from strength to strength. It represents a most welcome addition to Phuket’s restaurant scene.
