At Karon Beach Square, at the beach side
entrance of Mövenpick Karon
A casual restaurant and bar with contemporary comfort food and superb drinks prepared by our professional mixologists.
Mint Restaurant Outdoors, upbeat and buzzing is a good way to describe Mint. It was good to see young, well-trained staff noticeably enjoying their work.
There´s a lot going on, with theme nights including Jazz, Latino, Salsa dancing and more. We were there on a Latino Night and were entertained by two couples dancing. They collected curious passers-by, as well as diners, teaching them a few steps - even a little boy who brought the house down with his dancing prowess following the professionals´ lead. If you want to be entertained or be part of the entertainment Mint is the place to be.
I was already enjoying myself well before we ordered our meal due to a combination of the lively ambiance, the motivated staff and a not-too-loud `Techno House´ background music. A DJ takes over later in the evening for those who want to kick on after dinner and have a dance or continue to drink at the bar.
We settled down with a few pre-dinner cocktails, including Mint´s signature cocktail - a large glass mug with a handle, a metal screw cap and a straw. Inside, a green mint, rum, sugar and soda concoction similar to a mojito but with an individual twist conjured up by the restaurant´s professional mixologist, who doubled as a brilliant juggler and fire breather!
Dinner is a choice of à la carte or help-yourself from the carvery and buffet. We chose the help-yourself option, which included beef, lamb and pork cuts along with skewers of seafood, fish, shrimp, squid and side dishes such as baked jacket potatoes with a choice of sour cream, chives, bacon bits or butter and various sauces. There were also assorted flavoursome sausages of all varieties and sizes. A separate buffet spread was loaded with a variety of entrées and salads.
We opted for wines by the glass and chose Goya Cabernet Sauvignon and Goya Chardonnay, along with Perrier sparkling water and to round things off nicely, we settled for Mövenpick ice-cream and coffee.
Table settings were interesting. Large metal cans of the type that you might expect bulk cooked vegetables to come in were prepared with individually wrapped cutlery sets. As one set was used, and as we worked our way through the variety of dishes available, we just changed to new clean sets of cutlery without the need to call a waiter.
Our table was outside with a good view of the entertainment, carvery, buffet and bar. Mint is a very much a family orientated restaurant, reflected in the number of diners who had children with them.
Our electric shuttle was called for our return to the main car park, all so convenient and easy. An all this a mere hundred metres from the pristine sands and turquoise waters of Karon Beach and the Andaman Sea.
