Located between the salmon-pink Sino Portuguese facade of the 282 room Centara Grand Resort and a gleaming line of surf and sand, the Coast Beach Club has the most exotic of settings. Sink into a luxurious armchair under a parasol among giant-trunked palms, listen to soothing music and choose from a thoughtfully selected range of food and drink.

For a so-called ‘bistro’ the selection is surprisingly eclectic; a full-scale Italian menu complements an international à la carte selection which features international ‘tossed’ dishes, such as sustainable Tasmanian salmon and shrimp tostada, half a dozen enticing Italian pizzas, authentic pastas and New World burgers. The Coast seafood menu features top of the range ‘Fine de Claire’ oysters and line-caught fish of the day. You can even choose your meats from slow-cooked brisket or ribs to New Zealand sourced char-grilled Black Angus steaks. Something for everyone.

Invited to try the shared starter of cold cuts by our charming host, we sample an exotic range of meats and cheeses – the ideal appetizer for the main course to follow. They are exquisitely fresh and moist – authentic gorgonzola and parmesan cheese provide the perfect complement to pancetta, prosciutto and salami.

There is an impressive array of signature cocktails, ranging from the appropriately named Poseidon’s Delight to something called Toxic Antifreeze. Moreover, the wine list is carefully contrived and many wines, happily, are available by the glass. I begin with a Thai Monsoon Shiraz, lighter than its Australian counterpart, and afterwards move on to an Argentinian Malbec for the main course. Both are excellent value. My partner selects a Talawan from a wide-ranging list of beers.

For the main course, I choose the Tasmanian Salmon Steak which comes with a generous salad. Crisp at the edges without being overcooked, the fish is packed with flavour. Perfect . More adventurous, my friend opts for the Texas Beef Brisket with honey and beer gravy; it is predictably rich-tasting.

For dessert, we share a chocolate fudge: a luscious confection of chocolate ice cream and brownie with whipped cream.

If you are anywhere on Phuket’s west coast, Coast Beach Club and Bistro is a must-visit. It has everything: a magical setting, great food and wine – and all at affordable prices. Join the ranks of enthusiastic ‘Coasters’.
