A trendy lounge & grill, looking directly across the crystal waters of Patong Bay with stunning sunsets.
To arrive at Sea Salt is to cross the threshold to another world; one moment fighting the remorseless Patong traffic, the next entering a haven of calm serenity. Magically the noise has disappeared; instead the setting sun, its rays reflected across the dark blue sea, provides an eloquent welcome: a perfect setting, at the ocean’s edge. It’s time for a Margarita from the restaurant’s elegant ‘White Bar’; it’s time to absorb the funky background music and the romantic atmosphere.
The menu offers a diverse range of dishes that is genuinely international. From ten appetizers, you can try Waygu beef tostados or Salmon tacos from Mexico, Taiwanese popcorn chicken, Thai BBQ pork and even a Bibimbap salad from Korea.
If one key attribute of a good chef is his (or her) capacity to improvise, my partner’s tossed salad is a fine example of the art – sliced beef steak and a ravishing array of fresh vegetables (red onion, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, chilies and mint leaves). Exactly the kind of spicy starter designed to send a Thai diner to seventh heaven. My Salmon fish cake with yellow curry and green beans is quite simply the best I have encountered anywhere. Flavoursome, crisp and unbelievably succulent.
The main courses are just as appetising. My lady dining companion opts for Roasted pork, char sui style, which arrives on a wooden platter, appropriately accompanied by bok choy. Baked spinach (a Popeye special) provides the final touch to an exciting Cantonese dish. The pork is aromatic and exquisitely tender. My Grilled sea bass steak, generous in size and cooked to perfection, comes with a cauliflower and broccoli truffle gratin. A clever combination.
All this fare is complemented by a decent bottle of house red, a Chilean merlot from Maipo Valley. The wine list is, like the cuisine, truly international in flavour, with 20 reds and a dozen whites to choose from.
If the rest of the menu matches the dishes we tried, it can only be a feast for the palate. Romantics might consider splashing out on a shared plate of grilled or cold seafood with the mandatory lobster and tiger prawns. At the other end of the spending scale are inventive and affordable pizzas, four pasta dishes, oriental soups and even a cheese board. Something for everyone – whether you are from New York, Norway or Nanking.
Sea Salt Lounge and Grill is a new venture which richly deserves to succeed. The location is magical, the service attentive and the food exceptional.
