Described as the “leading chain of wine shops and wine-themed restaurants in Southeast Asia”, Wine Connection now boasts more than twenty bistros. There are no fewer than five in Phuket. Their runaway success? Testament to the vision of their French founder. His formula? Open an up-market wine retail outlet and combine it with a restaurant, so customers can take their purchase away, or even better, and at little extra cost, enjoy the bottle with a quality meal.

Wine Connection in Patong enjoys a prime position, perched above the bustle of beachside Banana Walk. Eat inside in air-conditioned bliss or outside – as we do – close to the action and the elements.

We start with Spanish style Gambas, plump prawns cooked in an aromatic garlic, paprika and olive oil sauce. A Mediterranean classic that does not disappoint. Other starters include Nachos with beef sauce, tomato salsa, cheese and sour cream (a dish that looks divine), crispy Calamari or layered Eggplant. Platters offer hand-picked cheeses or cold cuts. A tasty Italian presence is ensured by six salads, seven pastas and eight pizzas. And not just your conventional offerings: you can explore a Smoked chili pasta or sample a Brie and Speck ham pizza.

While fish dishes includes sea bass and salmon, Wine Connection is justly celebrated for its beef: my partner has for years enthused about the Boeuf bourguignon. She cannot resist having it again, chunks of slow braised Australian beef in rich gravy with fettuccine pasta. Eaten to whoops of delight. I opt, more soberly, for the Oz Tenderloin, served with pepper sauce (my choice) and roasted vegetables. Succulent and cooked to perfection.

And the wine? I almost forgot. A glass or two of a predictably splendid Negro Amaro Barrique. Most customers choose a bottle… And why not! The choice is impressively wide – from Italy, Spain, France, Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Complemented by reasonable prices and friendly service. Some bistro…
